I used to be a smoker, what convinced me to quit was knowing that I would eventually have to one day. It was either that or die of lung cancer or emphysema.
There are two different types of relationships smokers can have with cigarettes.
There are the people who love cigarettes, and have the all or nothing relationship. They love cigarettes so much that if they decide to quit, they can no longer have that occasional satisfaction from cigarettes by smoking one or two a day. The only way these people will successfully quit is cold turkey. The reason is, it would be too difficult for them to smoke once in a while because that would just tease them. These are the people who quit on and off frequently because they always fall back in love with their love, if you will. My tip for this group is, learn to say no and find other things to do when you have the urge to smoke!
