Antibiotics to Treat Your Child’s Ear Infection – A Growing Cause For Concern

By age 3, two-thirds of all children will have suffered from at least one ear infection. Next to the common cold, a childhood ear infection is the most commonly diagnosed condition in the United States. Antibiotics are usually the preferred remedy for healing, but a lot of the time, prescriptions are written without a certainty that an ear infection even exists. This precautionary treatment has raised a growing cause for concern.

Though it may feel natural to relieve your child’s ear infection pain with an antibiotic, you may be giving them something more harmful then helpful. Antibiotic therapy is extremely serious and may be life threatening if an allergic reaction occurs. Blatant misuse of antibiotic prescriptions have allowed for “super-strains” of bacteria to develop. These “super-strains” often times become resilient to antibiotic treatment. The strains are making it more and more difficult for advanced surgical procedures to be performed. If medicine does not have an effective antibiotic, then bacteria will not allow any life-changing surgery to occur. (more…)
