When you think about type 2 diabetes, thoughts about your sex life probably don’t come to mind. Actually impotence is a common complaint of men with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Between one and two thirds of men with diabetes have trouble getting an erection, but impotence caused by diabetes can be prevented in most men whose body is still able to produce insulin.

Poor blood sugar control is responsible for nerve and small blood vessel damage… when your blood sugar level rises, if it rises too high, sugar sticks to your cells and one of the problems it causes is permanent nerve damage. The level of this damage is revealed via the HbA1c test which you have taken every three months.

Impotence is a condition that increases with age, but the incidence of this in a male with diabetes is from two to five times greater when compared to non-diabetic men in a similar age group. Some diabetic men experience impotence ten to fifteen years earlier than their non-diabetic counterparts.

One of the answers is to bring blood sugar levels back to within a healthy range, usually indicated by a HbA1c level less than 6%. Many cases of nerve damage from diabetes can be reversed by good control of your blood sugar levels.

Medications prescribed for other medical conditions such as high blood pressure also cause impotence. Changing this medication may have a positive effect… but don’t stop taking anti-hypertensives until you speak with your health care provider. Tranquilizers and alcohol can also cause impotence.

Nicotine is also responsible for constricting your blood vessels, so smoking can also reduce the penile blood supply.

If you are beginning to experience impotence, do not hesitate to discuss this with your health care provider. This information is just part of your medical history. He may refer you to a Urologist who specializes in the treatment of impotence… if there is a physical cause that cannot be corrected, there are several methods you can use that will allow you to resume sexual activity.
