Nail fungus may be particularly difficult to deal with. It is resistant to treatment and the infection may first subside and then recur. Fungal infections of the nails usually occur when the nails are constantly exposed to hot and humid environments, such as the shoes that cause the feet to sweat.

The dermatophytes are the most frequent fungi that infect humans. They are primary and not opportunistic pathogens (they can infect healthy bodies, without requiring any damage to the immunity or any portal such as a skin wound). Due to the fact that they feed themselves off keratin, they can affect all the bodily areas that contain large amounts of keratin, such as the skin, nails and hair.

Nail fungus may stay with you forever, if you don’t get treatment. If the infection is allowed to evolve, it will cause pain and the nails will become thicker, lose their shape, lose their distinctive glow, break easily and the edges will become irregular. What is more, apart from the pain, fungus can cause permanent damage to the nail. If the condition is left untreated it may have additional harmful consequences, because many patients have difficulty walking due to the fact that their toes are infected.

It should be emphasized that the nails reveal many things about our overall health. Diseases such as diabetes, immune deficiencies associated with leukaemia or cancer and diseases of the immune system may cause problems in the nails. Moreover, some diseases of the lungs may cause characteristic changes in the nails and fingertips.

Good hygiene of the feet and hands are the foundation of the prevention of fungal infections:

* Fingernails must be cut properly and must be kept clean and dry.
* If you do manicure and pedicure select professionals who sterilize their tools, or better yet, use only your own tools.
* Wear comfortable shoes and avoid very narrow shoes and tight socks.
* Avoid wearing synthetic socks and sneakers. Cotton socks are better and should be frequently changed, especially if your feet sweat easily.
* Change and wash your towels regularly and do not allow other family members to use them.
* Do not put artificial nails, because they trap the water inside, which becomes static and allows fungal growth.
* If you have indeed experienced a fungal infection, throw away your old shoes or gloves to prevent the recurrence of the infection.
* Wear rubber gloves every time you wash the dishes.

Now You Need To Pay Close Attention Here

Everybody hates using a swimming pool that stings the eyes and throat. Kids who swim underwater without goggles can get a serious case of burning eyes that can lead to tears. There are ways to make sure this doesn’t happen both by changing the way people behave in the pool and- if it is your pool with the problem- by keeping on top of pool maintenance.

Red, irritated, burning eyes happen most commonly if you swim for a long time in a pool that uses chlorine as a sanitizer but it is not usually caused by chlorine. It is caused by chemicals called chloramines. These are produced when chlorine reacts with ammonia in the water and when proper steps are not taken to maintain the pool well. Bloodshot eyes can also be caused by or made worse by other things like strong sunlight, dry dusty winds, pollen, allergies or by microbial infections.

Chloramines

Chlorine plus ammonia equals chloramines. Chloramines cause that burning eye and throat feeling. The odor can also cause asthma symptoms in poorly ventilated indoor pools. If you or your children suffer eye problems in a public pool, complain! State and city health authorities take these issues seriously.

The ammonia comes from sweat and urine that pool users contribute to the pool. One way of reducing the buildup of chloramines in the pool is to make people shower before they enter the pool. You should also warn children that urinating in the pool is not good for anyone.

How to Protect Your Eyes when using a Pool

Protect Eyes against Sun

Sun protection is a good idea at all times. Sun ages the skin. There is a scary rate of skin cancer in the US (one in five people will suffer skin cancer sometime in their life). Excessive sunlight is the major cause of cataracts. Sunglasses with a strong UV protection factor are recommended. The US government recommends sun protection creams even in the winter! Wide brimmed hats, staying in the shade and covering up are the best options for sun protection.

Goggles

Goggles protect the eyes against irritants like chloramines in the water. They can also protect against sun if they are colored. Check the packaging!

Also:

* Avoid make up when swimming, as this can wash into the eyes.
* Remove contact lenses, if you use them. Microorganisms in the pool can grow in soft contacts,
* ‘Artificial Tears’ is a government recommended brand of eye drops for irritated eyes.

Pink Eye caused by Infections

Pink eye caused by infections (from bacteria or viruses) is called conjunctivitis

In children, especially, these infections tend to spread easily by contact. Pink eye is dangerous in very young babies and should be reported to a doctor immediately. It can cause discomfort for up to a week in older children and adults, as the infection runs its course.

If you are Maintaining Your Own Pool and Using Chlorine as a Sanitizer

Well balanced water in a swimming pool won’t cause burning eyes even if you use chlorine. There are links to pages at the foot of this article that have details on how to balance pool chemicals. An important part of pool maintenance is to routinely monitor chloramines and treat the water with chlorine as necessary. It may sound to be against common sense to add more chlorine to get rid of the irritating vapors in a pool but the extra chlorine breaks down the chloramines.

Microbes in the water- as a result of low levels of sanitizer- can cause skin conditions as well as ear, throat and eye problems. Water filters also need continuous monitoring and backwashing or cleaning. Some people avoid using chlorine altogether and swap to biguanides or bromine as a sanitizer but these systems need as much routine maintenance to be safe.

After a Chlorine Shock

If you use a chlorine ’shock’ to tackle algae or chloramines, always make sure the free chlorine levels have fallen below 4mg/L before swimming. Very high levels of chlorine can cause skin irritation and affect the eyes. This is the one situation when chlorine will cause ‘pool eye’ in itself.

Jack Arthur writes extensively on Swimming Pools.

Hunger and tiredness are two symptoms that often coexist. This was the case for me when I was always tired: I was very hungry even if I had eaten just one or two hours earlier, and I always had to eat right before I went to bed at night in order to fall asleep.

Are you asking yourself why am I always tired? Or why am I always hungry and tired? Let us consider what the reason may be for your problem and what you can do about it.

IS IT THE KIND OF FOOD YOU EAT?

Meals with a high content of processed flours and sugars will cause your blood sugar to rise quickly. Your body will then release insulin into your blood stream and cause sugar to be absorbed into your cells and used for energy. But if the rise in blood sugar is too fast, a lot of insulin will be released and your blood sugar levels will quickly fall below normal. Your body may interpret this as lack of available energy and cause you to be hungry even if you ate not long ago.

To find out if this is your problem: Add protein and fat to your meals that takes a longer time to convert into blood sugar, and reduce the amount of simple carbohydrates. This will give your body a more stable energy supply.

ARE YOU PHYSICALLY STRAINING YOUR BODY?

For a long time I was not able to find the reason for my excessive hunger. But when I stopped working out for a period it disappeared. This let me know that my energy consumption had been higher than its energy supply. When I stopped working out, the amount of energy my body needed was lower and my excessive hunger disappeared.

Normally, this problem can be solved by eating more, and by eating the right foods to support your restitution between workouts. But there may also be a medical condition causing your energy supply to be low even if you eat a lot.

To test if over-consumption or under-supply of energy is your problem, take 10-14 days off from your workouts and see if the hunger disappears.

YOU MAY NEED TO CHECK YOUR METABOLISM

The thyroid gland regulates your metabolism (and energy consumption). And your levels of thyroid hormones will rise naturally (and so will the energy consumption) if you work out or do any other strenuous activities.

But your thyroid hormone levels may be higher than normal, even if you do not need the extra energy. This is called hyperthyroidism and can be checked by your doctor and regulated using medicine.

HOW IS YOUR DIGESTION?

Even if you eat a lot you may not be getting enough energy. This happens when your digestion system is not able to absorb the energy and nutrition it needs from the food you eat. If so, you will likely also be experiencing other symptoms related to your indigestion: stomach pains, constipation or diarrhea, excessive gas and stomach bloating.

The possible causes are many: Food allergy or intolerance, fungal infections such as candida or parasites such as worms.

WHERE SHOULD YOU START?

First you should go see a doctor to find out if there is a medical condition causing your excessive hunger and tiredness. Start by asking an open question like why am I always tired? Make sure your doctor tests your thyroid hormone levels to see if they are too high. And ask him or her specifically about testing for parasites and allergies.

Are you in a hurry to lose weight and keep it off? Most of us would like to lose weight as fast as possible and then not gain it back.

It would be far easier to lose weight permanently if replacement parts weren’t so handy in the refrigerator. ~Hugh Allen

Hugh Allen is right. It is so tempting to eat when you know your chocolate cake with strawberry frosting is just inside the refrigerator.

It is so tempting to eat when all your good food and good beer is just five steps away from the table. It is so tempting.

So, my first advice is this – go shopping and buy fruits and vegetables to replace all your sweet stuff in your ref. This may not be the fastest way, but it is the nearest way to lose weight.

Taking this seriously, here are some tips for you to lose weight permanently:

1. Go to the gym and work out. Sweat those fats off. Go to the gym and have a personal weight lose coach and program. There are specific programs for specific purposes.

There are exercise programs for quick weight loss, let’s say for four weeks. There are even programs that just turn your fats into muscles. When considering the gym, always have as much water as you can. You are sweating much, so you need water to replace the water you sweat. Do this to avoid dehydration.

2. Drink as much water and include it in your diet. Water therapy is one way of losing weight you must not dismiss. When you are taking much water, you are doing yourself a treat.

Our body works well when we have much water. To put a little science on it, our cells are working well when they are hydrated enough.

Water is much needed in every function of our body systems especially the digestive and circulatory systems. When you have this in mind, you sure will take as much water as you can have.

Drink two glasses of water right after you wake up in the morning before you take your breakfast. During meals drink more water than you should. This way, you will feel full and you will eat less.

3. Fruits and vegetable diet. As I have mentioned, you may opt to replace the contents of your refrigerator.

Buy a crate of fruits and vegetables you want to eat instead of junk food and beer. You can even buy a blender and make a juice out of your favorite fruits with some veggies in it. This is healthy. This is even fun. You can have fun while doing the fastest way to lose weight.

Munch fruits like apple, pineapple and watermelon whenever you feel hungry instead of sweets. Sweets are rich in carbohydrates which will easily turn into fat.

4. Change your outlook in life. Think positive and believe you can shed fat fast and lose weight. What your mind can conceive, your body can achieve.

Baltimore, Maryland’s Ernestine “Ernie” Shepherd, at age 73, is a certified personal trainer, professional model and competitive all-natural bodybuilder. In March of 2010, on the stage of a television show in Rome, Italy, she was formally given the title of World’s Oldest Performing Female Bodybuilder (by Guinness World Records).

Not content to rest on her laurels, a couple of months later and less than two months shy of turning 74, Ernestine was back in the states and back on stage competing in the Capital Tournament of Champions bodybuilding contest. At this Musclemania competition she came in first place while competing in the Grand Masters division (ages 55 and up) and took second in the overall Lightweight Women’s category.

What makes these accomplishments all the more impressive is that as late as her mid-fifties Ernestine was an out-of-shape, amply-padded school secretary who had never worked out a day in her life. A shopping trip with her sister, Velvet, to buy bathing suits changed all that; laughing at each other and seeing the sad shape they were in, Ernestine and her sister decided to join a gym and started an exercise routine.

However, people start exercise programs all the time, but they don’t end up as bodybuilding champions and professional models. They don’t develop a body with just 9 to 10% bodyfat as the 5 foot 5 inch, 130-pound Ernestine Shepherd has done. What made the difference?

First, shortly after they began their program of exercise, Ernestine’s sister died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm. Devastated, Ernestine stopped working out. After some time had passed, she was reminded by a friend that her sister would have wanted her to continue what they had started together. As a result, after a time of mourning, with renewed determination and dedication to get fit, she returned to the gym.

Here are some of the other factors that appear to have helped Ernestine Shepherd to succeed so thoroughly to transform her body, while so many others have failed.

1. She started slowly and built herself up gradually under the tutelage of a personal trainer; therefore, she’s had no injuries (and few of the aches and pains typical of folks her age) in her 17 years of training.
2. Ernestine made good nutrition a priority. Her bodybuilding protein needs are met, for example, by relying heavily on egg whites (high in protein — low in calories). Interestingly, the only nutritional supplement she takes is vitamin D.
3. Her cardio needs were not neglected. Ernestine has a running / walking program which includes 10-mile runs and upwards of 80 miles per week when training to run a marathon. She also likes to run in local 5K (3.1 miles) and 10K (6.2 miles) races and set personal records in these events in the last couple of years.
4. Ernestine seeks out expert advice. When she decided to take up competitive bodybuilding at age 71, she enlisted the services of an online training program to make sure she did it right. Seven months of sport-specific training later, in 2008, she competed at age 72 in her first bodybuilding contest and won first place in the Masters division (45 and older) at the Natural East Cost Tournament of Champions Bodybuilding and Figure Championships.
5. She maintains a positive attitude toward exercise and life in general. From her perspective, the daily workouts are not seen as work, but rather as a journey to better health and more energy.

Bodybuilding champion Ernestine Shepherd shows us that falling apart as we age truly is merely an option — NOT a mandate! She is a role model not just for senior women everywhere, but for every one of us. We can thank Ernestine for showing us what is possible as we age — a more youthful existence than we ever dared believe.

Perhaps because it has become known that premature ejaculation is a prevalent problem among many men that a great number of treatments for premature ejaculation have emerged in the market.
Desensitizing Cream – Desensitizing creams are also effective in desensitizing you so that you don’t ejaculate easily. Thus the enjoyment and fulfillment of the sexual act is actually diminished, but it will indeed make you last longer in bed.

You need to do some research and find out everything you can about premature ejaculation so you can understand the process and learn to control it.

Secondly, you will find out that premature ejaculation is actually mind conditioning. Why is it mind conditioning you ask? Simply because men have conditioned their penises to ejaculate as quickly as possible, why? When you were younger and masturbating in your room or in the bathroom, didn’t you try to finish as quickly as you can for fear of being discovered? In this sense, the penis is conditioned to finish its ‘task’ as quickly as possible and it has rubbed off even now that you are older and actually with a partner.

So you need to re-train your penis. You can do this by masturbating (again) but doing it more slowly this time and letting yourself get to feel the sensations of getting hard and learning to control your ejaculation.

While making love you can also consider a variety of position and see what position will work for you best, the position that allows you the longest time to be erect and pumping into your woman.

These are just some of the treatments for premature ejaculation, try them out and realize a brand new you. Satisfy your sexual partner with a longer erection that will take here to mind blowing orgasms all night long.

Now pay close attention here,

What you are about to discover is something most men will never know about Treatment For Premature Ejaculation. This is one thing which is an absolute must know for every man out there. You are about to discover an ultimate secret weapon which will make any woman chase you around like crazy Even If You Are Bald, Fat Or Ugly!. Trust me….You don’t want to miss this one.

Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer, or Mesothelioma disease and asbestos cancer as it is also referred to is a nasty cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. So if you work with asbestos or have asbestos roofing, asbestos insulation please read on because that stuff is not illegal and it should be. It’s lethal and you may be due some form on compensation.

About Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer

Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer is one of the one of the deadliest diseases known to humanity. The average life span of someone who had been diagnosed with the disease is less than 24 months. This is partly because it has a long incubation period. It is a cancer contracted men and women who have come into contact with asbestos through work or in their homes through insulation, asbestos siding or roofing. Breathing in the asbestos fibers is lethal as they stick to the lungs and other areas of the respiratory system and vital organs. Hence Mesothelioma gaining its reputation as the asbestos cancer.

There currently is no cure for Mesothelioma so why on earth is asbestos still legal. It should have been banned as soon as the link was made between asbestos and cancer. Instead there are a growing number of companies who continue to work with asbestos despite the millions of dollars over 6,000 companies have now had to pay out in compensation to Mesothelioma asbestos cancer sufferers.

Lawsuits for those affected by Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer

Have a look at these astounding statistics. In the United States alone 4000 new cases of mesothelioma cancer are diagnosed every year. 4000 people die every year of the cancer. Over 700,000 people to date have filed claims against more than 6,000 companies. 250,000 more cases are expected to be filed before the year 2020. The average mesothelioma lawsuit settles for between 1-6 million dollars.

Since the powers that be seem in no hurry to ban asbestos, the key for those readers who think they may be exposed to asbestos is to get legal advice immediately. It is best to get specialist mesothelioma legal help, as even if you don’t have cancer there are some people who have been overly exposed that have sought legal compensation.

Remember, once you get diagnosed it’s often too late. Be sure to pick a good mesothelioma attorney with a track record of winning lawsuits and getting good settlements for their clients. Because so many lawsuits are being filed against companies using asbestos there are a few rogue lawyers wanting to make their fortune or reputation with a seemingly easy win. However, it is best to stick to reputable law firms with a successful history of helping those afflicted by mesothelioma asbestos cancer.

Alcohol detoxification is the process of ridding the body of excessive amounts of alcohol (toxins). It can be different for everyone depending on the individuals drinking habits and history. This information is from my experience as a recovering alcoholic. I do not claim to have medical knowledge of the detoxification process. From years of drinking I have been through many different stages of detoxification. Some worse than others. I will share a few of them with you here and what I learned from the process.

Detox basically means to rid the body of toxins. Depending on how much and for how long one has been drinking, the length of time it takes to entirely rid the body of alcohol can vary. From a few days to several months. From experience as an alcoholic and due to the progression of the disease of alcoholism, the period of time increases as the disease progresses. This has been my experience. Meaning, over the years, each time I detoxed from alcohol the period it took to rid my body of the toxins increased. There may be a medical reason for this, such as liver damage, but I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, so I do not know the reason.

There are really several parts to alcohol detox. First, one must stop adding more alcohol to their body. If you want to stop drinking, you’re going to have to stop drinking. If you’re anything like me, that was a lot easier said then done. “I’ll quit tomorrow” was a common theme in my life, yet tomorrow never came. It’s been said there are two things an alcoholic does not like; the way things are and change. What a dilemma. How you stop drinking is a whole different topic, but basically it’s quite simple; you stop. For me, wanting to stop meant the pain of the way things were finally outweighed the fear of trying something different (i.e. living without alcohol). I realized I could not not live with or without alcohol. Again, getting past that point was not easy and could fill numerous more articles.

So you have stopped drinking, now what? Again, this depends on the amount and how long you have been drinking. As an experienced drinker, I knew that once I reached around 1 liter of vodka consumption in a 24 hour period for more than a few consecutive days, the detox process would be… well, hell. Meaning I was in for some pretty discomforting withdraw symptoms like cold sweats, nausea, and headaches. These may not sound bad, but if you’ve ever experienced them you know it’s horrible. Withdraw symptoms, depending on the individuals drinking history, can and usually are part of the detoxing process. If you or anyone you know is experiencing withdraw symptoms from alcohol, it is highly recommended you consult a physician. Alcohol detox and withdraw can be extremely serious resulting in seizures and hallucinations. At my first attempt at sobriety in 1997, I was drinking roughly 2 liters of vodka a day for several months. When I abruptly quit, I ended up in the hospital for a week going through severe detox and withdraw. I experienced hallucinations and had to be strapped to the bed to prevent me from pulling out my IV’s.

The actual detox process can last from a few days to a week or more. The longest I have ever spent in a detox specific facility was seven days. And that was prior to entering an in-patient treatment program, also known as “rehab.” On a few occasions I detoxed myself or had a family member help me reduce the consumption of alcohol over a few days. This I would not recommend. From experience it does not work very well. If you are an alcoholic, and only you know if you are or not, the last thing you want to do is control your drinking. I can either control it, or enjoy it, not both. It’s sort of like placing a kid in a room with a big red button and telling them not to push it. The best thing is finding a facility dedicated to alcohol detox. Plus, they often have medication such as Librium that helps with the detox and withdraw symptoms making it less painful.

If you or someone you know is in need of alcohol detoxification, check your local directory or yellow pages for alcohol detox centers.

Because prescription medications can sometimes have unwanted side effects, many people look for natural cures for acid reflux. In addition, most prescription medications were not designed to be taken for long periods of time, possibly while a person makes dietary and lifestyle changes which can be natural remedies for acid reflux. Herbal remedies for acid reflux are based on what herbalists know of traditional medicine and traditional medicinal plants. Some of these are common food herbs, which pose no danger for long-term use, but their effectiveness as natural cures for acid reflux has not been proven.

If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, it is important to see your doctor regularly, even if you feel that your symptoms are under control. And you should let your doctor know about any botanical or herbal remedies for acid reflux that you may be using. It is important to see your doctor regularly, because stomach acid can damage the esophagus and lead to more serious conditions including cancer of the esophagus. If you are relying on natural cures for acid reflux and you become hoarse in the morning, develop a cough, or feel a need to clear your throat frequently, these may be symptoms of silent acid reflux. Silent acid reflux is the term used to describe acid reflux that affects the voice box and the vocal cords, but does not cause heartburn symptoms. So even if natural remedies for acid reflux keep your heartburn under control, you should still see your doctor regularly and report new or different symptoms.

Herbal remedies for acid reflux include chamomile, meadowsweet, slippery elm, cancer bush, fennel, catnip, angelica root, gentian root, ginger root and other botanicals, including aloe. Slippery elm was used historically by native peoples to treat stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn and other digestive complaints. Fennel and gingerroot were also common “folk remedies” for the relief of indigestion. Modern herbalists have found that a combination of several of the herbs that had been used for indigestion could be effective natural remedies for acid reflux. Some may call them natural “cures” for acid reflux, but long-term relief of acid reflux is best accomplished by changes in lifestyle and eating habits.

For example smoking relaxes the sphincter muscles that normally prevent stomach acid from reaching the esophagus. It also dries out saliva in the mouth and throat, which normally would neutralize some of the stomach acid and begin the digestive process. If you use herbal remedies for acid reflux and you do not stop using tobacco products, then you may still have acid reflux and you are still at risk of developing esophageal cancer. The major risk factors for developing esophageal cancer include acid reflux, smoking and alcoholism.

This brings up another lifestyle change that is recommended for long-term control and relief of acid reflux. Reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption can reduce acid reflux. In particular, alcohol consumption in the evening is believed to lead to more symptoms of night time acid reflux, as well as other health problems. While some argue that a glass of red wine has many health benefits, this is a 4 ounce glass, before a meal, and for those who suffer from acid reflux, even this may be a problem. Alcohol increases stomach acid. Prescription and natural remedies for acid reflux are geared towards reducing or preventing excess stomach acid. It just does not make sense to continue to drink alcohol when you have been diagnosed with acid reflux.

Changing your eating habits may be natural cures for acid reflux. If you normally eat a large meal late in the evening, less than three hours before bedtime, then you are more likely to suffer from nighttime heartburn or other acid reflux symptoms like coughing. This is because acid is traveling up out of the stomach and into the throat. Raising the head of the bed is also considered one of the natural remedies for acid reflux symptoms that occur at night. Gravity helps keep the acid in the stomach, but eating your last meal earlier and making it a smaller meal may prevent nighttime acid reflux.

Finally, weight loss should be mentioned as one of the natural cures for acid reflux. If you are currently at your ideal weight then you may not need to read this section. Overweight and obese people are much more likely to suffer from acid reflux, including nighttime acid reflux. Trying herbal remedies for acid reflux control and making no effort to lose the extra pounds will undoubtedly be disappointing. Using prescription and/or natural remedies for acid reflux while you are trying to lose weight makes sense. Avoiding fried and fatty foods is often recommended for people who suffer acid reflux. If you avoid these and eat several small meals during the day then you may naturally lose weight and naturally cure acid reflux. Eating several small meals every couple of hours is often recommended by diet doctors, because it increases your metabolism and keeps blood sugar levels stable, so you don’t feel sleepy after a meal, don’t feel a need to lie down and stomach acid is less likely to travel back up into the esophagus.

These are only some of the possible natural cures for acid reflux. Your doctor, naturopath of herbalist may have more suggestions. For more information about acid reflux and other digestive problems, visit www.digestive-disorders-guide.com.

If you have ever tried to get to sleep at night, but were unable to sleep due to a burning feeling in your chest or throat, then you have probably experienced acid reflux. Acid reflux commonly occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t close properly and stomach contents leak back into the esophagus. This is what is referred to as reflux.

Acid reflux usually feels like a burning pain in the chest that can move up to the throat. It often feels as if food is coming back into the mouth and leaving an acidic taste. Often acid reflux is worse after eating and can be worse when lying down.

About 25 million adults suffer acid reflux daily. Over 60 million experience heartburn at least once a month. Acid reflux treatment can help manage the condition, but not all acid reflux treatments are created equal. Finding a reflux treatment that works can be tricky, and deciding on a course of treatment should be discussed with your doctor. Often the treatment will depend on the severity and frequency of symptoms.

Medications are common in acid reflux treatment. The simplest of medications for acid reflux treatment are the antacids, which can be bought over the counter. Antacids are usually the first drugs recommended for acid reflux treatment. The antacids neutralize stomach acid so the reflux contains no acid to burn the esophagus. The main drawback of antacids in acid reflux treatment is that they empty quickly from the stomach and then the acid returns. Common over-the-counter antacids for acid reflux treatment are Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Alka-Seltzer, and Milk of Magnesium.

A foaming agent is another acid reflux treatment available as Gaviscon. This works by covering the stomach contents with foam to prevent reflux. The foaming agent is an acid reflux treatment that is usually used along with another treatment method to be the most effective.

Histamine antagonists, known as H2 Blockers help to stop acid production. This acid reflux treatment prevents histamine from stimulating acid producing cells. The receptor they block is known as the histamine type two receptor. The H2 antagonists should be taken thirty minutes before meals to be an effective acid reflux treatment. The H2 blockers relieve the symptoms of acid reflux, but do not heal the inflammation of the esophagus that often accompanies acid reflux. The H2 blocking drugs are available both by prescription, and over-the-counter. The over-the-counter versions have lower dosages than those available by prescription. Common brand names for the H2 blockers are Tagamet, Zantac, Axid, and Pepcid.

Another acid reflux treatment medication are the Proton Pump Inhibitors. These drugs are only available by prescription, and are more effective than the H2 Blockers. The Proton Pump Inhibitors both block the secretion of acid into the stomach, and protect the esophagus from acid so the inflammation heals. Some doctors recommend the use of both an H2 Blocker and a Proton Pump Inhibitor taken at bedtime. The common brand names of Proton Pump Inhibitors in acid reflux treatment include Prevacid, Aciphex, Prilosec, and Nexium.

Recently, an implant was approved by the FDA as an acid reflux treatment for those who don’t respond well enough to medication, but who want to avoid surgery. The implant is called Enteryx, and is a spongy solution that strengthens the Lower Esophageal Sphincter to keep the stomach acid from refluxing into the esophagus. The implant is injected during an endoscopy.

Many people prefer to use natural treatments over medications. Herbal treatments are another common acid reflux treatment. There are many available herbal treatments, but not all may work equally well. It does take longer to see results with herbs for acid reflux treatment. It may take up to two months to know whether a particular herb is having a therapeutic effect.

Herbs that decrease stomach acid in acid reflux treatment include slippery elm, flax, licorice, calendula, wild yam and meadowsweet. Care is needed in using licorice in those with high blood pressure and heart disease as it can worsen the condition.

Other herbs are known for relieving indigestion that can lead to acid reflux. One of these herbs is chamomile. It has been used for centuries for its calming properties. It is believed to lead to lower stomach acid because of its high calcium content.

Ginger can help with digestion and nausea. Peppermint is also good for digestion, and when used as a drop on the tongue can help with heartburn.

Lavender is known for reducing stomach acid and is a popular acid reflux treatment. Lavender is a popular herb and is known for healing properties over the entire body.

Digestive enzymes seem to be gaining in popularity for their ability to aid in the digestive process. Undigested food, especially protein can lead to acid reflux. Digestive enzymes used as acid reflux treatment can ensure the stomach has enough hydrochloric acid to digest the protein that can lead to acid reflux if left undigested. An enzyme supplement containing betain or pepsin, or papaya should be taken with meals to ensure proper digestion of protein.

Pineapples and lemons can also be used for acid reflux treatment. Pineapples support digestion, and have a high level of the enzyme bromelain, that helps prevent acid reflux.

Lemons dipped in salt can also prevent acid reflux.

Acid reflux treatment also depends greatly on diet. There are many foods known to trigger acid reflux. While not all foods will affect everyone in the same way, certain foods have a higher incidence of acid reflux symptoms. Foods that should generally be avoided include peppermint, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, citrus juices, and tomato products. The affect of these foods may be mild to severe depending on the acid reflux sufferer. Others will find they have no problems with the foods listed, but will have problems with other foods. A good way to detect a connection with foods and acid reflux would be to keep a food journal for 2-3 weeks. Write down everything eaten and any symptoms experienced. Smaller, more frequent meals can also go a long way in relieving the symptoms of acid reflux.

Millions of adults suffer with acid reflux on a daily basis. Acid reflux is common but it is not a trivial problem. Acid reflux can greatly impact a person’s quality of life. Fortunately, a wide variety of acid reflux treatments are available. With the vast array of prescription, over-the-counter, herbal remedies, natural treatments and diet and lifestyle changes, acid reflux can be treated successfully in most people.
