Autism Parent Training In 2007 the Center for Disease Control’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM) discovered which 1 in 150 8 year olds in different features of the nation hold an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Years ago autism was declared to crop up in 4 to 5 per 10,000. This means that the prevalence of autism has increased to epidemic levels in the persist a large amount of years. This is the reason why most any parent needs to be educated around autism screening tools, in case their child is showing signs of autism. This article will discuss 2 autism screening tools the I provide are many effective in diagnosing autism. Autism is a complex developmental disability that usually appears during the first three years of a child’s life. It is defined by a unique set of behaviors and is considered a “spectrum disorder.” What this means is that a child can have different symptoms that go across a spectrum. Autism is often diagnosed by physicians, health care workers, or special education personnel. Two effective screening tools to diagnose autism are the CHAT which stands for the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, and the CARS which stands for the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Both will be discussed now, as well as who can use these tools to diagnose autism. 1. CHAT Checklist for Autism in Toddlers is a short questionnaire which is filled out by the parents and a primary health care worker (usually the child’s Doctor). The CHAT is recommended to be given to all children at their 18 month check up. The Chat consists of two sections: the first nine items are questions answered by the parents and the last five items are observations made by the primary health care worker. These items look at behaviors which if absent at 18 months, put a child at risk for a social-communication disorder. These behaviors are: a. joint attention, including pointing to show and looking to where a parent is pointing, and b. pretend play. The items are then scored, and a determination of pass or fail is given. Children who fail are rescreened in one month, and if they fail again should be referred to a specialty Dr. or Clinic for further testing. (more…)

Medical Professionals

With America becoming a multi-cultural society and the growth of financial earnings of medical professionals, numerous parents today look upon their children to be just another one of those average medical professionals. It is a common belief in Asian and even some Western cultures that in order to be successful and prestigious in the American society, one must become a physician, as this is the only and probable way that would bring prestige and stable financial support for that individual. However, as years progresses, I had found that to be a false belief, although this belief may be true to some extent. Through my contact with current medical professionals, I have found that they have viewed their daily profession as a routine, to be abided by without mistakes, same tasks, same time, everyday. Through the eyes of the professionals I’ve contacted with, I have quickly learned that the profession they’re in are not of their own interest but instead a path set forth by their parents to be followed, they have been instilled an image in that the only correct way in life is the way they are taught by their parents.

Although my parents had paved a brick walkway for me, to major in a science major in my undergraduate years, take the GCAT and go on to the best medical school possible, I have yet found any of the science courses I have taken interesting. Yet I am sure I would be somewhat successful if I have followed this perfect paved way my parents had open for me with constant reinforcement of reading scientific and medical journals and newspapers. This would neither be a challenge nor an experience I would want to get out of in my lifetime.

Since my high school years, I have been replenished with numerous disciplines. Although it was limited to the disciplines that was offered by my high school, I have taken the opportunity to reach beyond and begin taking courses offered by my local community colleges. This allowed me to learn quickly that all of the disciplines involved the field of law, in that law determines whether an opinion or even a fact sometimes is right or wrong. Law is not simply black and white as some science courses seem and it is not totally grey as some of the social science disciplines may be, instead law is a mixture of the two. (more…)
